Sydney Olympic Park: Biology and Senior Science Program
www.sydneyolympicpark.com,au
Biology & Senior Science –

The topic areas for these two Stage 6 subjects include A Local Ecosystem, The Local Environment and Maintaining a Balance.

Each program involves a range of hands-on activities designed to cover many of the outcomes in the syllabus. Some of the activities include measuring abiotic factors to compare mangrove and salt marsh environments, conducting vegetation transects and quadrats to determine distribution and abundance of organisms in the environment and adaptations that these organisms exhibit.

Students justify and evaluate their sampling techniques, and design and conduct a simple experiment. Human impacts are identified and students are encouraged to propose possible solutions to these.

In the Ecosystems programs, students participate in a range of first-hand investigation techniques to identify factors affecting the survival of organisms in an inter-tidal wetland ecosystem and the adaptations that wetland organisms have to cope with these factors. Field activities include transects and environmental monitoring using scientific equipment including data loggers.
